Nelson Mandela

Twenty-three years ago, in a small pub in Winchester, I had the misfortune to have to endure a very small man ranting and raving because ‘Antiques Roadshow’ (a television programme) had been cancelled while the BBC broadcast coverage of Nelson Mandela’s walk to freedom. In the view of the man in the pub, Mandela should have been shot. One has to remember that many of those who praise him today were once his enemies, supporters of apartheid.

Today, the great man’s long life has come to an end. We salute him as one of the inspirational figures of our time. May he rest in peace.
